Safe guarding backup against CrytoLocker?

Post by supradata »

Does anyone know of any way to use FBackup to safe guard the backup from encryption by CryptoLocker malware? The CryptoLocker malware encrypts a list of files types including .doc, .pdf etc and then demands a ransom payment to decrypt them. The encryption is probably impossible to crack and uses an RSA 2048 asymetric public key and private key which is stored on a remote server. Some websites mention a list of file types which does not include .zip but others do include it. Anyway, it is probably not safe to assume that .zip files will not be effected.

My ideas so far include, password protecting the network backup storage directory, running a small program after backup to copy/rename the backup files to something which would be ignored, set the backup file to read only...

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Hi,

As I read about CrytoLocker, there aren't only some file types affected, it can lock all files. The best way to prevent problems is to keep the backups as read-only and your antivirus/firewall updated.
