I have the same problem using version 4.4 on a Windows 7 64 bits machine when OUTLOOK.PST is in use.

The log attached is the one when using mirror mode (when running in full mode, no error/warning message is shown but in the log the skipping of OUTLOOK.PST is mentioned and the result file has size of 0 bytes).

    Hi,

    1. Do you use an administrator account?
    2. Is the C: drive format as NTFS or FAT32?

    Sorry for the delayed response.

The userid I use is marked as administrator.
The C: is formatted as NTFS.

    Hi,

Do you receive this warning every time you run the backup?
Please make sure there is no antivirus/spyware application scanning that file during the backup execution.

Yes, it happens every time when I start a backup (either in full or in mirror mode) while the file is in use by Outlook 2003.
I excluded the file from scanning in McAfee without any success.
Even stopping scanning at all did not change the result.
No other virus/spyware applications are active or even installed.

Can you manually copy that file to another location?

No, when Outlook is active and thus using the file I get the error message 0x80070021.
The description, although in the local language, is indicating the same reason: a part of the file is in use by an other process.

When Outlook is inactive the file can be copied without problems, just like it happens when using Fbackup.

So it looks like Fbackup is not doing what it is supposed to do, namely bypassing this error.

    Hi,

It seems the problem is with the Shadow copy service.

Backing up open files has the following limitations: It works
    - only on Windows XP, Windows 2003 Server, Windows Vista or Windows 7
    - only for users with administrator access rights to copy open files
    - only on local hard drives
    - only on NTFS formatted partitions
    - only if the VSS (Volume Shadow Service) is running and it is properly configured

If all of the above are true and still cannot backup open files please see this document

I fear the problem has something to do with VSS in combination with Windows 7.
I've doublechecked all points mentioned and they are all true.
I've read the document and all services etc are running.
I've installed other products (free downloads and evaluation versions) and they all ran into the same problem. One of the producers of a (commercial) tool is mentioning on his website that it is not working for Windows 7 yet.
Maybe you guys face the same problem.

In addition to my previous message:
The tool works fine under Windows XP Professional.
Under Windows 7 I've checked the working of the tool with Procmon (of Sysinternals) and it looks like the VSS is doing okay. When opening the original file after creating the VSS the error occurs.
When using Fbackup for the file OUTLOOK.PST in the mode "full" the tool no errors nor warnings occur, but the resulting zip file has a length of 0 bytes.

    Hi,

We don't have such problems here.
We can back up open files with FBackup under Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit OS.
We have many other clients that use FBackup for open files without problems.

    Please follow these steps:
    1. Download and extract DebugView from http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/DebugView.zip.
    2. Start DebugView
    3. Start FBackup and run the backup.
    4. Send us the debug log to info[at]fbackup[dot]com

    Hi,

I've done as requested and advised by mail, but the file downloaded and installed is not build 195 but 194. Nevertheless I've tested this version, unfortunately without success. Please let me know were I can find build 195 that may solve my problem.

    Hi,

As the problem is related to the Volume Shadow Copy service on your system, please make sure the service is working properly.
You can back up the pst files with no problems when Outlook is closed.

    Hi,

It took a while to make sure that the Volume Service Copy service is working correctly. I think that the shadowcopy sets created by Windows updates and their existance by using the VSSADMIN LIST SHADOWS command proves that.
So I digged a little deeper and used Procmon.exe to trace the fbackup process and the use of OUTLOOK.PST. The latter showed a FILE LOCKING CONFLICT when FBACKUP tried to read the file after completion of the VSS copy as you may see below.

    Hi,

One other thing that I discoverd while using the DebugViewer of SysInternals: a difference in the result of the GetAnswerToRequest functions used in the execution of the FBACKUP exe. See below (marked in bold):

    Hi,

I've found the problem. I happened to be a DCOM element that was not registered.
The registration is probably not part of the installation of Windows 7 because the same error occured on my 32-bit as well as the 64-bit versions. And it somehow has been activated on my XP machines.

    Thanks for all your help.

    Hi,

I re-open this case because in contrary to my previous message it still doesn't work. Registration of the DCOM's looked like the solution but it after doing the same steps on the 32 bit machine the same error (33) kept popping up. When I started the backup of OUTLOOK.PST on the 64 bit machine it failed, while I was shure that the same job did run okay a couple of days before. I'm certain I rebooted the machine between the two attempts.
In the meantime I've tried other free backup tools and they ran into the same problem, so it has something to do with my computers. May it has something to do with the language used? Windows 7 is using double naming for the same entity, e.g. DOCUMENTS and DOCUMENTEN, USERS en GEBRUIKERS. The OUTLOOK.PST I'm using for the test is located in a shared folder C:\USERS\ALL USERS\DOCUMENTS\OUTLOOK. All maps can be found under different names; USERS, GEBRUIKERS and DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS point to the same map: ALL USERS aka OPENBAAR and DOCUMENTS vs DOCUMENTEN.
Since I discovered in one of the other tools that a couple of possibilities was mentioned in the log, while processing only one file I was wondering if this may cause the problem I run into.
    Please help.
