Hi,

On a daily basis, you should use Mirror backup to copy only new and modified files.

Thanks!

Changing to the built-in scheduler worked a treat last night. This morning I have a successful backup message.

One more question if you have time - I am a bit confused about the difference between full back up and mirror back up. Is mirror the best to use from now on, so that it just adds any new files or files that have been changed? Does a full back up take much longer, and therefore not necessary to do on a daily basis? The descriptions given for each type of backup do not make it really clear (to me anyway) when or why to select one or the other. Thanks for your help.

Hi,

If you select "With Windows Scheduler" option in Backup Properties->Scheduler, you need to use your Windows login username and password.

If you don't have a password, you can use the second option "With Built-in scheduler" which does not require a password.

My hard drive was corrupted and replaced and FBackup 4.6 was started again but with a different username to the original one entered by the technician. A manual full backup worked the first day, but with 7 warnings. It was scheduled to then backup daily, but for a week now has not worked. When I try to edit the scheduler it won't accept any password and it also won't allow me to leave the password empty. I have tried all passwords that might be relevant, but none are accepted. I have tried using the original username and password but that is not accepted. I have changed to mirror backup but that still does not work. How can I get the backup to happen daily as required? I would appreciate any suggestions.

I backed up my data using Fbackup with standard compression, to an external disk. My computer crashed and I've reconnected the external disk - The archive is there and I can see the files inside it but when I try to restore it does the file structure then prompts for a password when it starts to do the files. I've put in the password that I used but it says it's incorrect. Have tried other combinations of things, for example, reversing the upper and lower case letters but still nothing. I also tried reinstalling Fbackup to see if I could look at the properties of the .fkc file, which I can. Won't accept the password when I try to change it in the file properties either. Only thing I can see that's out of place is the date of the last backup in Fbackup is shown as 12/30/1899. Any ideas?

Hi,

If you did not set a password, the zip file should not be encrypted.
There is no default password in FBackup as by default "no encryption" is checked.

I have just downloaded the latest version (4.4 build 188) and within the properties under compression I have selected Standard Compression (Zip2 compatiable) with a password set. I ran a sample backup to a hard drive and I see the zip file there but was not prompted for any password while trying to open the file. I was able to see the contents. Is there something I am missing or is the password not setup for locking down the files that I backup? Please help.

OK,

I just installed build 133, which does now work as expected, though I've still got a few questions. First, here's what I did:

- Exited from FB 131
- Removed my Windows User password (that was only added to get FB backups to work as explained above)
- Restarted FB 133
- Removed the currently scheduled FB backup job
- Created a new FB schedule for my job

Now, the new job does run as expected. The thing that I find odd is, monitoring the Windows Scheduler dialog, just as the new FB job fires off, its "status" changes to "Could not start" (in Win Scheduler). The job finishes successfully, but the Windows scheduler status still reads "Could not start" and the "Last Run Time" is shown as "Never". FB seems to have a strange relationship with the Windows Scheduler...

Is that expected?

Ultimately, build 133 *does* work as expected, so that's great. I just find some of the details strange...

Any additional input appreciated.

Thanks,

> You don't need any password to schedule a backup job with FBackup.

I know I can *schedule* a backup within FB without a password. The problem is, that scheduled job (in Windows scheduler) doesn't run. I've read many places on the web that WinXP won't allow a scheduled job to run against an account with no password, and that's just what I see with a job scheduled from within FB, since I can't define the account password from the FB interface.

> Please make sure you have the latest version of FBackup installed (now is build 133).

Hmmm... I have 131, which doesn't find any updates available. Looking at the website, I only see 131 listed also. Where do I get 133?

> You don't need to use a password for backups.

Hmmm... I don't think that's true. Using Win XP Pro (SP3), my default account doesn't have any password. When I try to schedule a job in FB, it fails to start. My system has another admin-level account complete with password just for this purpose, so I went to the Windows scheduler and changed the FB job to use the other account and password. In that case too, it fails to run properly, though I'm not sure why.

Finally, I created a password for my normal User account, and rescheduled the job through FB. Again, it failed to run, as there's no way to define the password through the FB interface. In order to get the scheduled job to run automatically, I finally had to go into the Windows scheduler, edit the job created by FB, and enter the newly assigned Windows password.

Now, the job runs as expected, but it's not very convenient, as it doesn't seem to be possible to successfully schedule a job from within the FB interface. At the very least, I have to go into Windows scheduler, open the FB job, and add my User password.

Any advice?

Hi,

You don't need to use a password for backups. The scheduled jobs should run without using a Windows password.
The information you posted from Help file is no longer valid and will be corrected in the next release.
