Have just installed on my pc and even with the mirror option I am not getting files and folder copied to my backup location on a removable drive. All I get is a large backup file with the extension .fkc

I am sure I have used this before an obtained a proper mirror.

Have definitely got the mirror option set but seems not to work!

Any help or suggestions are most welcome

Hi, I've been using FBackup for several years and it's an excellent product!

I've recently run into a problem when creating a mirror backup from one external drive (f:)(NTFS) to another (g:)(FAT32).  The source contains my iPhone/iPad backup directory. The backup runs for a few hours and completes about 70% successfully, but returns about 11000 warnings in the log file which state;

Destination error (code 82). The directory or file cannot be created. (G:\MobileDeviceBU\74e1b2ca1b145b8803cfca75417a8dffe00210cf-20111016-114905\fffdabcd3e3f03783a8728abdda29ec2136dcd36). G:\MobileDeviceBU\74e1b2ca1b145b8803cfca75417a8dffe00210cf-20111016-114905\fffdabcd3e3f03783a8728abdda29ec2136dcd36.
[10/11/2011 4:57:16 AM] Warning: Skipping file F:\MobileDeviceBU\74e1b2ca1b145b8803cfca75417a8dffe00210cf-20111016-114905\Manifest.mbdx

There are no problems with disc space. As indicated above, about 70% of the backup is written to the destination G: drive successfully.

I was running FBackup 4.6.253

Any ideas or suggestions?

Many thanks,
Paul

Hi,

I need to make sure FBackup uses the same original catalog as when you change the backup destination, the catalog is deleted and a new one is created. There is a warning for that.

If a new catalog was created, the old files are not related to the new backup job and they are simply ignored as FBackup does not delete the "extra" files from destination.

You should never manually remove the backed up files from destination to see if FBackup will "repair" them as this is not going to happen. FBackup uses the backup catalog to determine which files to be backed up. It is supposed the files are not manually removed from destination. (Please note I am not talking about the old backup files which are ignored).

One day I paid attention that FBackup works too fast. I start to check and found that backup disk letter changed by Windows, and FBackup lose it.
I fixed rule to work with new letter, but backup continue to fail.
The reasone was that no space left on backup disk. It is strange, because backup disk is bigger then original partition.
It happen because many files changed during this time, and FBackup fail to remove removed files.
I deleted manualy some folders, and FBackup reported success. But many deleted files and folders left in Backup.
Run FBackup 10 times, played with options, read forums, upgraded version from 4.5 to 4.6. Nothing help. I see that new added and deleted files do removed from backup, but old files left. The same problem happen if I remove some file from Backup. FBackup fail to repair it.
The only solution I see is to remove all backup, and set it from scratch.

Hi,

The comparison criteria used by FBackup includes: date modified, date created, read-only, archived, hidden and system.

1. Yes, FBackup will overwrite the file. Please note if the size is the same, it doesn't mean the file was not modified. Try to compare two text files with a single different letter inside. The size is the same but the content could be different.
2. The file will be overwritten.
3. The file will be backed up again with the new name. FBackup does not track your actions to have a history of that file. It just sees a new file and will back it up.
4. The moved files will be backed up again. The same reason as above.

These questions are about Mirror backups, in particular about the algorithm used by FBackup to decide whether a file on the source drive has "changed" (and thus needs to be copied to the destination drive).

1. If the source file's Modified Date has changed but its content and size have not changed, will FBackup overwrite the copy on the destination drive or will it simply adjust the Modified Date of the copy? (The latter is more efficient.)
2. If the source file's content has changed but its size and Modified Date have not changed, will FBackup overwrite the copy on the destination drive, or will it be fooled into thinking the copy is already up to date?
3. If the source file's filename has changed but its size, Modified Date and content have not changed, will FBackup overwrite the copy on the destination drive or will it simply rename the copy? (The latter is more efficient.)
4. If the source file has been moved to a different folder (that's included in the source specification) but its filename, size, Modified Date and content have not changed, will FBackup copy the file to the different folder on the destination drive and delete the old copy from the old folder, or will it simply move the copy to the different folder? (The latter is more efficient.)

I may have some follow-up questions.

Hi,

Backup4all will back up the source files located on a network drive, but not if they are open. Open files cannot be copied over the network.

Hi,
Even with the commercial edition Backup4 all, will not copy files that are located on a network drive? All source files have to reside on a local computer. Just want to make sure that I understand.

Hi,

I didn't tell you that Backup4all will copy open files over the network as it doesn't do that.
If the source files you want to back up are open, you need to install a copy of Backup4all on each computer. Open files can be backed up only if they reside on a local hard drive.

Ok, so I need only one copy of Backup4all to be able to back up the files that are on the network, that are always open. Can I install this one copy on another computer that will essentially be copying the same files, or do I need another license?

Hi,

You cannot do that using FBackup. The number of stored backup versions is limited to 1.
In our commercial edition, Backup4all, you can keep as many versions as you like. There is an option to indicate the number of stored backups or you can keep unlimited versions.

I do not the program to overwrite the files that are there. I.E. If I run FBackup once a week on (example, c:\documents and settings\documents), in a month I want to have 4 backups of the same files.

I'm not sure if this is working okay or not. I keep trying to backup from Patty'sDocuments and Patty'sPhotos (not under Patty'sDocuments) from an internal hard drive to my portable external one. But, each time I try it, it takes hours (started at 6:30 this morning and finished at 11:30 tonight) and I end up with more GB, files and folders in the backup than in my original folder. I'm reading this from WE under properties for each drive.

S is my original drive, E is an internal drive that it gets mirrored to every day, K is an external drive that I periodically mirror to. When I run the E drive every day, it takes no more than 2 minutes. I just tried to run the K drive one a few weeks ago. It should not have had that much new to add. Although, now that I think of it, it ended up with warnings or errors in the end. I wasn't home when it finished and my husband had shut the computer off.

The data for my drives is as follows (size, size on disk, contains: files, folders):

For Patty'sDocuments folder:
S - 26.8GB, 26.9GB, 38068, 1718
E - 28.7GB, 28.8GB, 39067, 1727
K - 28.8GB, 29.5GB, 38852, 1726

For Patty'sPhotos folder:
S - 296GB, 296GB, 58529, 668
E - 297GB, 297GB, 58963, 675
K - 296GB, 297GB, 58934, 674

These are the settings for my E backup:
Backup type:
Type: Mirror
Clear archive bit: No
Folder name prefix: none
Fast mirror: Yes
Create full paths: No
Copy files in a subfolder: No
Remove excluded or deleted files from backup: Yes
Only if source drive is available: No
Zip the files: No
Copy NTFS security permissions: No
Copy NTFS alternate file streams: No
Allow file splitting when spanning: No
Sort mirror files for optimized spanning: No

These are the settings for my K backup:
Backup type:
Type: Mirror
Clear archive bit: No
Folder name prefix: none
Fast mirror: Yes
Create full paths: Yes
Copy files in a subfolder: No
Remove excluded or deleted files from backup: Yes
Only if source drive is available: No
Zip the files: No
Copy NTFS security permissions: No
Copy NTFS alternate file streams: No
Allow file splitting when spanning: No
Sort mirror files for optimized spanning: No

The only difference is I have the K drive set to create full paths and I don't even remember why I was doing that now.

Anyway, I cannot figure out how I keep getting different number of files and folders if they are supposed to be mirrors with deleted files being deleted. And, is it only because I have the K drive set to create full paths that backup takes 17 hours to run?

This last backup had two warnings. I think maybe because the daily backup ran at the same time as this one was running.

A few minutes later...... I reran the K backup to see if it would take forever again. It took under 2 minutes and the file it had warning on copied this time. I'm thinking maybe it was because it had to create the whole catalog again. But, I'm still curious about the numbers of files between the original and backups. Shouldn't they be the same?

The first backup execution is a complete mirror. After that only new and modified files will be backed up.

From your email I understand that you get a complete backup every time. If that is true, please send us the backup catalog (.fkc file) from View->Open Folder->Catalog Folder. to info[at]fbackup][dot]com

Hi,

FBackup is exactly what you need.
FBackup is a onw way backup solution.
Use the Mirror backup type to copy only new and modified files to destination and also remove excluded or deleted files from destination.

hi I'd just like to know whether the mirror backup function is a 2-way or 1-way mirror? Personally I'm looking for a backup function that copies files from source to destination in that direction only and only overwrites older files, leaving redundant files alone. For example a current working folder with current files backing up to an archive with older versions and deleted - but not the reverse (I don't want the deleted versions to pop up back in the current working folder). So, not really a mirror in the real world sense.

Hi,

As I understand, you manually put extra files in destination folder and want FBackup to remove them? If that is what you want, please note FBackup does not delete extra files from destination. I only handle the files that were backed up, according to the backup catalog file.

Hello,

I have the same problem here. I use FBackup 4.5.241 on Windows 7.

The Volume Shadow Copy service is already running and the backups are done normally, if any new file is added.

I have the "Remove excluded or deleted files from backup" option enabled, but if I run a backup task, the removed files from the source are not deleted from the destination.

I've also tested it by making a test backup. After the backup was completed, I've added more files in the destination directory, I've changed the source files and I added some more source files.

After running the test backup again, it finished successfully by mirroring the files from source to the destination by replacing any modified files and adding any new files, but the extra files from the destination weren't deleted.

Is there any other option that I may have forgotten to check out?

Thank you for any answers.

Hi,

Please note FBackup was design for data files and folders backup, not for system backup.
You cannot make a bootable backup using FBackup.

Hi,

Can you see in backup destination both files and folders?

Please send us:
- the .fkc catalog file for that job. You can find the .fkc file if you go to View->Open folder->Destination folder.
- the .log file for the last backup job. To find it, please go to: View->Job Logs->Last Backup Log.
- the last restore .log from: View->Job Logs->Last Restore Log.
Put the files into a zip archive and send them to info[at]fbackup[dot]com

Hello,
I have been using Fbackup for a few months now, and assumed that it was doing what I intended. When doing my normal year end archiving, I tried to restore the files to a temporary location to verify that my files were being backed up. I found that the restore only restored empty folders, no files were restored. The backup is a mirror with no known filters. I chose mirror because I am backing up 1 external HD to another. The primary is used as a joint file server for the office, and I need the backup software to be quick and efficiently only backup files that have changed. This is set to occur every few hours - so obviously there is not time for full backups int hat time period.

Since then I have manually run a full backup, and verified that when I used restore I got the actual files back.

Please help me with the original backup restore only restoring folders?? Thank you, Brion.
